Prostate cancer is the most common
cancer in men and recently doctors are realising that food nutrition has a lot
to do with prostate health. The prostate is a walnut-sized muscular gland that
secretes a thin, milky, fluid that lubricates the urethra (duct for urine and
ejaculatory fluids) and helps sperm survive after ejaculation. There’s no
hiding the fact that diet heavily influences cancer risk, no matter the type of
cancer however, knowing exactly which foods are beneficial and which ones are
harmful can help to shape a diet to achieve its maximum health potential.
There
is strong evidence that eating certain foods can significantly cut a man's risk
of prostate cancer. Here's a list of ten powerful prostate protectors:
10 Prostate Cancer Fighting Foods
Cruciferous
Vegetables - Eating three or more servings of cruciferous vegetables
like cauliflower, broccoli, kale and Brussels sprouts per week may reduce the
risk of prostate cancer by almost half.
Pomegranate
Juice - Research shows that pomegranate juice slows the growth of
prostate cancer in mice.
Flaxseeds
- Studies in mice indicate that flaxseeds may prevent and slow the spread of
prostate cancer.
Green
Tea - Green tea contains polyphenols. These mobilise pathways that
actually halt the growth of cancerous cells. They also play a key tole in
stopping the growth of blood vessels which might eventually feed cancer cells.
As if that wsan't enough, the polypenols promote a process called apoptosis
which is basically killing off key cell survival proteins thus making sure that
cancerous cells have not got a chance in hell of surviving.
Brazil
Nuts - Brazil nuts are one of the best natural sources of selenium, a
mineral that is strongly preventative against prostate cancer. Experts say that
taking an extra 200mcg of selenium per day will reduce the risk of prostate
cancer by 50%. Just a handful of Brazil nuts per day will meet this
requirement.
Garlic
- Garlic has been shown in several studies to cut the risk of prostate
cancer by as much as 53%. Garlic also contains a good amount of selenium.
Scallions
- One study showed that eating just 1/10 an ounce of scallions per day cut
men's risk of prostate cancer by as much as 70%.
Tomatoes
- Tomatoes are one of the best sources of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant
which has been shown in several studies to have a protective effect against
prostate cancer. The longer you cook tomatoes, the more anti-cancer
antioxidants are released
Remember
One of the largest and most
important reasons to pay attention to your diet is because obesity is one of
the leading factors in whether a man develops prostate cancer. If a man has
gained more than three pounds a year between the ages of 25 and 50, there is a
50% higher chance that he will develop prostate cancer than otherwise. So
remember to limit the calories you take in and do lots of physical activity,
walking is best.
