What are Garra Rufa fish? Also known as Doctor Fish, Nibble Fish Kangal Fish and Physio Fish, they originate from Turkey where they live and breed in the outdoor pools of some Turkish spas - they are famous for feeding on the skin of patients with psoriasis. The Garra Rufa themselves are members of the carp family of fish. They are usually around 10cm in length and sourced from Turkey and surrounding countries
What is a Garra Rufa Fish Spa Pedicure? More commonly known as the ‘Fish Pedicure’ it is natural pedicure method practised all over Asia. The treatment has been given a scientific name - ichthyotherapy - the use of fish to treat illness. During a treatment session, feet are placed in a tank of warm water containing approximately 100 Garra Rufa fish usually for around 15 minutes.
What do the Fish do? The Garra Rufa fish gently suck the dead skin from the outer layer of the body, leaving the under layer of skin aside. Whilst the fish remove this layer of dead skin, they actually produce an enzyme that has a vitalizing effect on the new layer of skin which is to replace the removed one; this means that the skin will feel softer and smoother than before. Surprisingly they don’t actually have any teeth so there is no risk of being bitten, the dry skin is removed using their large lips
